Lao
Where is Lao spoken?
Lao is primarily spoken in Laos, where it is the official language. It is the mother tongue of most of the population in the country, and it is used in government, education, and media.
Lao is also spoken by communities in neighbouring countries such as Thailand, particularly in the northeastern region, where the language is often called Isan. Some smaller groups of Lao speakers can also be found in Vietnam, Cambodia, and China.
Lao is a member of the Tai-Kadai language family and is closely related to Thai, with the two languages being mutually intelligible to some extent.
